Grand Slam helps Bombers Earn 6-1 Win over the Marshals

The Bombers closed out their home stand tonight against the McKinney Marshals. All around it was a solid game for the Bombers who got timely hitting, great pitching, and solid defense to earn the 6-1 win. The Bombers now head to McKinney this Wednesday for three games, including a double header on Thursday against the Marshals.

The Bombers got off to a great start. In the first inning, shortstop Nick Smelser was hit by a pitch. That brought left fielder Brandon Wood to the plate.Wood lined a single to leftfield, but the Marshall outfielder misplayed the ball which allowed smelser to go to third, and Wood to second. The next batter, designated hitter, Bobby Butvin was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, third baseman and Montgomery native, Brennyn Smith hit a pitch off of Marshals starter, Austin Verplank over the leftfield fall for a grand slam putting the Bombers ahead 4-0. The Bombers would score one run in the fourth inning. Wood hit an infield single. The Marshall shortstop stopped the ball, but taged out right fielder Myles Parma who got on base with a single. Center fielder Jordan Hammerman, came home to make the score 5-1, after hitting a single to right center and being sacrificed to second by Parma. Wood then came to the plate and hit a single to right that scored Hammerman making the score 6-1.

Brandon Bergen made the start on the mound for the Bombers. The right hander from Sam Houston State pitched seven excellent innings. He was in command as he  threw 96 pitches while recording five strikeouts. Bryan native, Ryan Ullman and Nathan Sorenson came in to pitch the final two innings of relief. Sorenson was able to get a Marshal to groundout to Nick Smelser at short to end the game.

Brennyn Smith made a nice play in the field in the second inning. Smith broke from his spot at third as he laid completely out for a ball that was bunted in the air by a Marshal batter. Smith was able to make the outstanding catch and recorded an out. Brandon Wood also made a nice catch when he had to sprint towards center to make a catch on a sharply hit ball.

The Bombers will now head to McKinney this Wednesday and Thursday. The teams will play a double header on Thursday to make up a previous game from earlier in the year. After the game on Thursday, the Bombers will return home to end the week. They will play Acadiana on Friday as part of Family Friday brought to you by the George Bush Presidential Library. The game also marks Hollywood Night at the ballpark! They close out the week by hosting The Woodlands on a Kids Free Saturday sponsored by Chicken Express, and it will be MLB Night by Scott and White Health Plan, The One Texans Trust-Mini Bat Givaway!
