Bombers Stay Perfect on Lucky Number Seven

Pitcher Zac Curtis

Thursday night’s matchup between the Brazos Valley Bombers and the Acadiana Cane Cutters proved to be a pitching duel as both teams were on their way to a no hitter until bats caught fire in the fifth.

Bombers pitcher, lefty Zac Curtis from Middle Tennessee University, came out strong in his first appearance with the Bombers. Curtis tossed six straight innings, four of which allowed no hits by the Cane Cutters.

After a quick four innings, Curtis’ no hitter was broken in the top of the fifth by the Cane Cutter’s leadoff hitter. Despite the threat, Acadiana was still unable to do any damage. In the bottom of the inning the Bombers sought revenge when Graham McIntyre cut off the Cane Cutter no hitter with a strong infield single. Designated hitter Brett Kauten then joined the trend by smacking a double out to right, allowing McIntyre to come around for the first run of the night. Kauten didn’t end his streak there, as he was able to steal third then come home on a wild pitch to send the Bombers ahead 2-0.

The Bombers were able to extend their lead in the sixth when G.R. Hinsley led with a double to right and was brought around on a single by Kauten. Acadiana struck back in the seventh, scoring 2 on a single to left and a triple to center. Brazos Valley was able to escape the inning still holding on to the lead with a score of 3-2. The Cane Cutters threatened again in the top of the eigth with bases loaded, but the Bombers were able to execute a stellar 1-2-3 double play to get out of the jam and end the inning.

The Bomber victory was secured in the eighth when Kauten, who got on with a walk, came in on a hit by Romero that brought the score to 4-2. Although Acadiana was able to load the bases again in the top of the ninth, Bombers offense came out in full force to hold them to 2, including pitcher Nick Johnson with the save. Kauten was named Player of the Game for the second night in a row after going 2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a walk.

Friday night is FIREWORK FRIDAY at American Momentum Bank Ballpark as the Bombers take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05pm.
