Twins Trouble Continues On The Road For Bombers

Texarkana, TX - June 28, 2019 – The Texarkana Twins have been rough on the Brazos Valley Bombers in Texarkana this season, and Friday night’s matchup proved no different. The Bombers dropped their second game in a row and their fourth game on the season to the Texarkana Twins in an 11-6 loss at George Dobson Field.

The Twins took control of the game early. Jake Taylor, who was expected to play in the navy and gold in Bryan/College Station, made his Texas Collegiate League debut as a member of the Texarkana Twins on Friday. Taylor delivered a two-run home run off Tyler Flores in the bottom of the first inning.

Bryant Shellenbarger fired back against the Twins in the very next half-inning with a swinging bunt to score Chase Kemp and Kyle Bergeron and tie the ballgame 2-2.   Flores found himself in a sticky situation in the bottom of the third as three consecutive in-field singles loaded the bases for the Twins. The Twins were able to plate one more off the bat of Taylor and another on a loaded-base walk, but Flores tossed two strikeouts and induced a fly-out to escape the inning.

Brian Williams entered the game in the fifth inning to relieve Flores on the mound. Flores recorded 3 strikeouts in his four-inning outing. Only two of the Twins’ four runs hit the books as earned for Flores. Williams, a Prairie View A&M Panther and Bryan, Texas product, struck out three in two innings for Brazos Valley.

Blake Shannon and a passed ball advanced the Twins lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth. However, the resilient Bombers offense made a valiant attempt at a comeback, led by the red hot bat of Shellenbarger.

The University of Akron commit crushed one to right field for a triple in the top of the seventh. Hunter Dobbins drove in Shellenbarger with a single that kept right fielder Steven Bonuz on his toes. Cam Haller did the same for Dobbins with an RBI single to the opposite side of the field to bring the game to 6-4 with the Bombers trailing.   Shellenbarger re-tied the game with a booming two-RBI double in the top of the seventh.

The Bombers made a pitching change to prevent the Twins from regaining the lead, but Texarkana countered Shellenbarger’s efforts with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Another pitching change for the Bombers ended the inning trailing 9-6.

The Twins added two more in the eighth to secure an 11-6 score line that would not change for the remainder of the contest.

The Bombers drop to 19-5 on the season.
