Bombers Well-Rounded Start to the Season Continues

Bryan/College Station, TX - June 11, 2019 - The Bombers continue their dominance over the state of Louisiana and the Texas Collegiate League with a 4-1 win over the Baton Rouge Rougarou to remain undefeated. Tuesday’s win concludes a ten-game sweep of the TCL’s Louisiana teams.

Henry Bird got the start for the Bombers and went five innings on the mound. Bird saw continued success pitching for the blue and gold. The Texas A&M at Corpus Christi commit notched four strikeouts, allowed three hits and no runs. This marks Bird’s third outstanding outing of the season.

“It’s always good to have some run support from the offense,” said Bird. “They’ve been doing a great job this year, and they’ve been putting a lot of runs on the board.”

And the Bombers offense has been nothing if not supportive.

The Bombers customary offensive explosion came in the fourth inning at the hands of a flagging Jacob Snyder on the mound for the Rougarou. Chase Kemp followed a hit-by-pitch for Sam McElreath with a double, getting them into scoring position. Bryant Shellenbarger sent the two of them home with a single to left that got past the left fielder, prompting a pitching change for the Rougarou. Snyder would end the day with no strikeouts and five hits allowed after just shy of four innings.

With Ashton Davis pitching for Baton Rouge, a Fielder’s Choice let one run in off of a chopper from Jordan Yeatts, and a wild pitch let the Bombers push one more across the plate to take a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

Dontae Woodard picked up Bird’s defensive effort in the sixth inning and pitched the seventh as well, striking out five in his two innings. Brian Williams took the hill for the Bombers in the top of the eighth. Williams allowed two singles, and the runners would advance to second and third on an error in right field. Logan LeJeune capitalized on the situation, driving in one for the Rougarou in the eighth. Williams struck out Brayden Morrow and Bo Barrilleaux in short order to control the damage.

The Rougarou could not counter offensively until LeJeune’s RBI in the top of the eighth. The Bombers defense gave up just a single run for the second time in two games.

On the subject of the Bombers defense, Kemp, who has been a standout at first base, said, “We got a lot of guys this year with a lot of experience, so it’s good to have a team full of some older guys as well as a couple younger guys that are studs. We got a lot of athletes, and we mesh really well.”

The 10-0 Bombers take on the Texarkana Twins for the first time this season in Texarkana on Wednesday.

“We know that [Texarkana] can swing it pretty well,” said Manager Brian Nelson, “and we know that they’re going to attack with the strike zone. We also know that, with us being 10 and 0 now, they’re going to be really pushing hard to give us that first loss of the season.”

The Rougarou fall to 1-11.
