Bombers sweep series with Acadiana after 5-3 win

Shortstop Horacio Correa III went 3-for-5 with a homerun and 3 RBIs in Sunday's game.

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 20, 2014) – With their 13th straight home victory, the Brazos Valley Bombers (30-10) swept their two-game series with the Acadiana Cane Cutters (21-19) after a 5-3 victory Sunday night.

“That’s a good club over there,” said Curt Dixon, Bombers head coach. “They’re going to be a playoff team when it’s all said and done, so to get a sweep of them at the back end of the week—I couldn’t be happier.”

The Bombers scored a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third after a two-run homerun by shortstop Horacio Correa III, his first of the season.

“The guys always try to get on me about hitting a homerun but it was good to finally get that off my shoulders,” Correa said. “Going into tonight’s game I felt a little bit more comfortable after last night where I hit that double, and I was just trying to keep the momentum going.”

The Bombers would extend their lead to 4-0 by adding another run in the bottom of the fifth. Acadiana would score its first run in the top of the sixth, but the boys in blue would put up a run in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 lead.

Things would get shaky in the top of the ninth as the Cane Cutters scored two runs and had the bases loaded with two outs, but reliever Nick Johnson would come in to get the final out of the game. Starting pitcher Tyler Nurdin would earn his first win of the season for his six-inning, seven-strikeout performance.

The Bombers have both Monday and Tuesday off, but will play a double-header against the Texas Marshals Wednesday in Dallas.

“We’re not playing everybody six days a week,” Dixon said. “We’re getting guys off days and staying fresh. I think that’s going to be the key for us down the stretch is our guys are going to be able to stay fresh.”

The Bombers will return to Cellucor Field Thursday for another two-game series against the Cane Cutters. Thursday’s game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and is Thirsty Thursday presented by Western Beverages, with dollar sodas, beers, and margaritas all game long.
