Bombers Best Cane Cutters on Fireworks Friday

Bryan/College Station, TX - June 7, 2019 - Fireworks Friday at Travis Field always draws a crowd, and the Brazos Valley Bombers did not disappoint in a convincing 7-4 win over the Acadiana Cane Cutters Friday night.

Tyler Flores made his second start of the season for the Bombers. The TAMU-Kingsville product improved on his first start by striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits and no runs in five innings.

“I was feeling great,” said Flores. “I was feeling better than my last start, and I was feeling better than I have all season, so everything that I’m doing here is working. I’m really thankful to the Bombers for everything, and we’re just going to keep it going for the summer.”

The Bombers offense showed out in what is quickly becoming typical fashion. Despite a quick bottom of the first inning, Bryant Shellenbarger got the Bombers on the board first with a two-RBI single that pushed Kyle Bergeron and Jordan Yeatts across the plate in the second inning. Yeatts responded with an RBI of his own in the next inning as part of a three-run effort by the Bombers, and Chase Kemp joined the fun with an RBI single as well. Rogers took advantage of a passed ball and a floundering Cane Cutter defense to add another to the Bombers scoreboard in the third. Jacob Padilla came home in the following inning off a sacrifice fly by Logan Sartori.

Sartori was hit by a pitch for the fourth time in this two-game series against the Cane Cutters.

Dontae Woodard relieved Flores in the sixth, and the Cane Cutters had his number. The Cane Cutters cut the Bombers lead in half with a solo home run and two RBI singles.

Tristan Stivors made his 2019 debut with the Bombers in the seventh inning against Acadiana. The Texas State commit pitched for both the Victoria Generals and the Bombers in 2018, sticking in Brazos Valley down the stretch. On Friday, Stivors kept the Cane Cutters off the board and off the base paths in one inning pitched.

“I came back here because I had the most fun playing here,” said Stivors about his return to Brazos Valley. “Great group of guys. I love the fans. I love the atmosphere.”

The Bombers took a break from scoring until the eighth inning. As the leadoff batter in the eighth, Kemp crushed a home run over the right-field fence to put the Bombers up 7-3. The Cane Cutters once again had no answer for a rolling Bombers unit.

The Bombers improve to 8-0, and the Cane Cutters fall to 1-6. The Bombers will host the Baton Rouge Rougarou on Monday.

This was the first of three Fireworks Fridays the Bombers will host this season. Come join us on June 14 and August 9 for another dazzling celebration of summer collegiate baseball excellence.
